The Amazing Dr.Pepper Ham - The Best Dish at the Table!
69You have to know your in for a treat and a new favorite recipe when the recipe starts with the words, "My great grandmother from The South..." and It could appear, as we move forward, that I am overly excited about the particular strangly prepared ham, but, make it and you and all your family and friends will love me and my great grand mother from The South.
My great grandmother from the South was a full blown cooking lady, you know the kind. She had the flower hand printed apron and the cookbook tattered as much as her Bible. Aparently, they read and cooked and cooked some more.
The most commonly asked question people ask when they hear about my holiday dish is, "Why Dr. Pepper?"
The Dr. Pepper has lots of acid in it, we all agree on that one I am sure. The acid somehow removes a great amount of the salt from the meat. It also breaks it down in a way that is easy to pull off, dip in the holiday marshmallow sauce, take a bite and melt!
There is not much to this, it is almost too easy. I always start with a Butt Ham or a Shank. These are in every grocer and usually cost fifteen to eighteen dollars. Ham may be on sale the closer it gets to Christmas. The rest of the ingredients are usually around the house. You will need about half a bag of light brown sugar, a can of pineapple, honey, and a 2-liter bottle of Dr. Pepper. You will want a pot that will hold the ham and have the lid fit or, I usually use aluminum foil to cover my pot.
Preparation takes about five minutes. Clean the ham with cold water, you may want to trim off some of the fat, sometimes there is a layer on the whole ham. I generally don't trim, no one trimmed in the old days. Pre-heat the oven to about 285 or 300 if it needs to go a bit faster. Take the rinsed ham and drop in in the pan, pour one 2-liter of Dr. Pepper over the meat. I use room temperature Dr. Pepper. I think it heats up faster, I guess. Squeeze a bunch of honey on it and pour one can of pineapples with the juice right on top of everything. The pineapples are very important. If you skip them, the chemical reaction in the meat doesn't seem to take place, I suppose the citrus is working with the acid in the Dr. Pepper. Even if you do not like pineapple, which I don't, you must put them in your dish anyway. You will never taste one pineapple; I assure you.
Cover this culinary wonderment and let it fill your home with incredible aromas for about 7 hours in the oven.
You will desire to thank me, I am most certain, so thank me like this, show everyone you love how to create this amazing Dr. Pepper Ham. Enjoy!

Never heard of it, but it sounds interesting enough to try.
I've never heard of this recipe ... but my teenage daughter loves Dr. Pepper ... and ham ... and pineapple (even though you said you can't taste that part) ... so it certainly sounds like a winner to me.
Of course, I've never made a ham ... but with this recipe, suddenly I'm ready to give it a try. Thanks for sharing!
You mention you need about 1/2 a bag of brown sugar but you don't say when or how to use it in your instructions. I am making this today and am going to assume youu mix it with the Dr. Pepper.

You mention you need about 1/2 a bag of brown sugar but you don't say when or how to use it in your instructions. I am making this on Saturday and am going to assume youu mix it with the Dr. Pepper. Can you confirm
My husband is always going on and on about how his Aunt makes the best Ham with Dr. Pepper so Im going to try the soda with my regular ingridients of honey brown sugar pineapple and cherry. I might skip the clove.
What is the cooking time?
so, i just finished eatin the ham. i'm a college football player and this is my first ham that i bought and cooked by myself. it turned out well. i'd say cook time at 285 should be around 6 and a half hours. . . mine got a little black on the outside. but overall not bad, i plan to use most of the leftovers in a 15 bean soup.
i sprinkle just a little brown sugar on top on the ham & pineapples & it comes out amazing!
Have you tried cooking this in a slow cooker? If so, for how long and at what setting? Thanks.
